Every mattress needs a base or a platform. Typically a mattress will be sold as a set, which includes a mattress and a box spring or a foundation. The foundation is an important part of your mattress purchase. For latex mattresses, you have the option of a wood slat foundation, a platform bed, or an adjustable (electric) bed.
Wood slat foundations are generally a wooden “box” with slats that run side to side and is covered in the same type of fabric as the mattress. Foundations maintain the same fire retardant standards as mattresses. Alternatives to foundations include platform beds and adjustable bases.
A platform bed is generally a wooden bed frame that is designed to hold only a mattress (no foundation) by including a slat system that runs side to side from the head to the foot of the bed. Most of the all-natural latex mattress manufacturers that we work with require that the slats be at least 2 inches wide and the gap between the slats be no more than 3 inches in order to meet warranty standards. A platform bed with a solid surface is not recommended and may not meet manufacturer warranty standards. We carry the Dapwood Furniture line of platform beds. We found that these beds provide a high quality and non-toxic alternative to using a foundation and metal bed frame and they come in very contemporary and simple styles.
Adjustable bases are mattress foundations that are electric and controlled with a remote control. Our queen size adjustable bases are designed to work with a queen size mattress and the king size is designed to either work with two twin extra long mattresses or the two separated bases can be synced together to work with a king size mattress. A queen size has one motor and a king size has two motors. Typical movement includes moving your head and shoulders up and down and moving your legs and feet up and down. Other options include massage feature, snore feature and zero gravity position.
