General FAQs

Organic mattresses are made from materials that have been grown or produced without the use of synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Natural mattresses are made from materials that are found in nature, such as cotton, wool, and latex. They may not be certified organic, but they do not contain any synthetic materials. The Organic Bedroom proudly offers both organic and natural mattresses.

  • Because organic and natural mattresses don’t contain harsh chemicals found in other mattresses, you won’t breathe in the harmful fumes and toxins found in polyurethane foam (memory foam), chemical flame retardants, etc. found in most mattresses.
  • Organic and natural mattresses are better for the environment. The production of organic materials uses less water and energy than the production of synthetic materials. Organic materials are also biodegradable, so they will not pollute the environment when they are disposed of.
  • Organic and natural mattresses are more breathable. Because of their design and the materials used to make them, mattresses made with natural materials will not trap heat and moisture, which can make you sleep hot and sweaty.
  • Natural materials used in the mattresses we carry are hypoallergenic, so they are a good choice for people with allergies.
  • Organic and natural mattresses are more comfortable. Some people find that organic and natural mattresses are more supportive and comfortable than traditional mattresses. This is because the materials used in organic and natural mattresses are naturally resilient and contour to the body's shape.
  • Organic and natural mattresses are durable and are expected to last a long time. They last a long time, because natural materials don’t break down as quickly and easily as the memory foam and other materials found in most mattresses. To back this up, the mattresses available at The Organic Bedroom have warranties as long as 25 years.
    • Organic and natural mattresses can be more expensive, depending on what other mattresses you’re considering. Sourcing natural materials and the production of organic and natural mattresses is more labor-intensive and expensive than the production of mainstream mattresses made with synthetic materials.
    • Organic and natural mattresses may be more difficult to find. Not all mattress retailers sell organic and natural mattresses.

We have a large variety of products from Naturepedic, Hypnos, Berkeley Ergonomics, Sleep & Beyond, Greenington, Malouf, Symphony Sleep, and Eangee.

We offer a 100-night sleep trial period for the Naturepedic mattresses we sell. But, for the
other mattress brands that we carry, there is no trial period.

We have several mattresses where you can do a Comfort Exchange within the initial period (typically 90-100 days), allowing you to swap out a component/layer to change the feel of your mattress if it isn’t quite right.

      • The best way to help you decide which mattress to purchase is to try several mattresses. The two main aspects (of a mattress) we recommend focusing on are support and comfort. Make sure you select a mattress that provides sufficient support so you don’t sink into the mattress which can hurt your back, spine, etc. You should also pick a mattress that’s comfortable for you. When you try several mattresses, you’ll find out if you like the feel of a pillow top mattress, an all-latex mattress, a traditional/hybrid mattress, or perhaps a wool or latex topper combined with a more traditional mattress.
      • Consider your budget. Organic and natural mattresses can range in price from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars.
      • Think about your sleeping style. If you sleep hot, you may want to choose a mattress that is made from breathable materials, such as cotton or wool. If you are looking for a supportive mattress, you may want to choose a mattress that has coils or firmer latex.
      • Online reviews can be a helpful way to learn about different organic and natural
mattresses, but keep in mind everyone’s support needs, sleep style, etc. is different.
      • Try before you buy. If possible, try out a few different mattresses before you buy one.
        • Ask lots of questions. If we don’t know the answer to one of your questions, we will do our best to find out for you.
        • If one visit to our store isn’t enough, come back as many times as you like to help you pick the perfect mattress for you. We like the company!
        • Are certifications like GOLS and GOTS important to you? If yes, make sure the
mattresses you try have those certifications.

          Material-related Questions

The most common materials in the mattresses available at The Organic Bedroom are cotton, wool, and latex. Some other materials you may see are silk, horse hair, camel hair, alpaca hair, cashmere, bamboo, PLA, etc. All of these materials are chemical free and responsibly sourced.

Natural materials are not synthetically produced and have not been exposed to pesticides, pollution, or other chemicals that may be harmful. Organic materials are just like natural materials, but they come with third-party certifications that confirm the quality and chemical free nature of these materials.

There are two main types of natural latexes used in our mattresses: Dunlop and Talalay.
Dunlop latex is dense and supportive – it has a feel similar to memory foam. Talalay latex is softer and more breathable than Dunlop latex. Dunlop is dense like pound cake, and Talalay latex is springier/fluffy like angel food cake.

The natural latex used in our mattresses is made from liquid rubber which is tapped from a rubber tree in a process similar to tapping maple trees for sap. This liquid rubber is then
baked in a sterile mold until it solidifies into a foam-like substance, which is natural latex!

The cover material (sometimes referred to the mattress encasement) is the fabric on the outside of the mattress. The most common materials include cotton, wool, and blended fabrics, but depending on the mattress brand/model, there could also be some silk, camel hair, cashmere, etc.

Off-gassing is the strong odor that stinks up your home when you purchase a memory foam mattress. More specifically, off-gassing is the release of Volatile Organic Componds (VOCs) from the mattress which can be very harmful if inhaled. The mattresses available at The Organic Bedroom are not made with any chemicals and therefore won’t off-gas.

GOTS and GOLS are the global organic standards for textiles and latex, respectively. Both of these certifications are common for the organic mattresses we offer. Third party
certifications like GOTS and GOLS ensure that a product follows organic standards from the sourcing of materials all the way through final production.

The mattresses we offer at The Organic Bedroom meet fire safety codes and are tested to be safe. Our mattresses do not contain any chemical flame retardants. Instead, wool serves as a natural flame retardant and can be found in most of the mattresses we offer.

Memory foam is made from petroleum byproducts, and it is packed full of harmful
chemicals. Memory foam has been linked to both short term health problems like skin
irritation and headaches as well as long term health issues like cancer, respiratory issues,
          and nervous system damage.

          Products-related Questions

The firmness level of a mattress refers to its degree of softness or hardness. Mattresses
available at The Organic Bedroom come in a variety of firmness levels, from soft/plush to firm and even extra firm. Most of our mattresses can be configured with a firmer side and a softer side, allowing a couple with different firmness needs to share the same mattress.

All of our mattresses are made in the USA.

Accessories like sheets, mattress protectors, comforters are made by US companies with
materials sourced from all over the world. For more information on the origin of certain
products, please visit the product page(s) on our website or give us a call.

The mattresses available at The Organic Bedroom come in the conventional mattress sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King. We can make mattresses in less
common sizes like Full XL or Olympic Queen. We also provide custom-sized mattresses…
all we need is for you to pick out a mattress and tell us what dimensions you need.

Yes, we can provide custom size mattresses for your antique bed, camper, boat, etc. We have several mattresses styles that can be made in custom sizes. If you provide the dimensions of your bedframe or the desired dimensions of your mattress, we can help you select the right mattress to meet your needs.

The weight capacity of a mattress is the maximum amount of weight it can support. Organic and natural mattresses typically have a weight capacity of 500-800 pounds.

Almost all of our mattresses can be used with an adjustable base - there are very few exceptions. If a mattress is not intended for use on an adjustable base, it will be disclosed on the product page.

We have a wide selection of pillows made from wool, cotton, shredded latex, solid latex, and more. Selecting the right pillow for you depends on the type of support your neck needs and the materials that feels comfortable to you.

Our most popular pillows are the adjustable shredded latex pillows and wool pillows.

Your mattress should be on a level, breathable surface such as a foundation, slatted
platform, or an adjustable base. Please note that slats should be no more than 3 inches
apart for slatted platforms and must be rigid. Some of our mattresses work well with
platform beds and foundations with flexible slats, however that will change the feel of the
          mattress.

While it is not required, we strongly recommend the use of a mattress protector to protect
your investment. The mattress protectors available at The Organic Bedroom are washable and breathable, helping you to sleep cool while still protecting your mattress.

The sheet sets available at The Organic Bedroom will fit mattress depths up to 15”. We
also have some sheet sets that work with 18” mattresses.

A latex topper is often used to add a new layer to your mattress, to add softness and pressure relief. A wool topper is often added for a more pillowy, plush feel, as well as added temperature relief. The decision of whether to choose a latex or wool topper usually comes down to personal preference and what feels best.

We do have some toppers that have both wool and latex in them, giving you the best of both worlds.

Yes! We definitely recommend visiting our showroom in Raleigh, NC and testing out our

customers to see, feel, and experience in the store.

Our mattresses come with warranties that covers defects in materials, workmanship, and dips that form over time. The length of the warranty varies by brand - the most common warranty periods are 20 and 25 years.

The Organic Bedroom does not accept returns on mattresses or other products.

          Health-related Questions

Yes, organic and natural mattresses are generally considered to be hypoallergenic. This is because they do not contain synthetic materials that can trigger allergies.

Many of our mattresses can be made without wool, and we have a selection of beds that
can be made without latex as well. If you would like to take samples of these materials to
your allergist for testing, we offer samples of wool batting as well as latex.

Please note: most of our brands require a doctor’s note in order to make a mattress without wool. This is because wool acts as our mattresses’ flame retardant, and without the wool, there is no fire protection.

Organic and natural mattresses can help to alleviate back pain by providing proper support and alignment for the spine. However, it is important to choose a mattress that is the right firmness level for your individual needs.

Yes, organic and natural mattresses are safe for children. They do not contain any harmful chemicals or flame retardants.

Organic and natural mattresses are naturally resistant to dust mites due to the wool used in the mattresses. For additional protection, some customers will get a 6-sided mattress encasement with a zipper.
